Alternatives North is a social justice coalition operating in the Northwest Territories. Within our ranks are representatives of churches, labour unions, environmental organizations, women and family advocates and anti-poverty groups.  Individual citizens are important participants in our work.

Alternatives North regularly meets Wednesday's at noon in the boardroom of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, 4916-49th Street Yellowknife, NT. New participants are welcome but call 867-920-2765 ahead of time to ensure the meeting has not been rescheduled or temporarily moved to another location.

Mine Abandonment/Perpetual Care Questions 

Questions have been posed to Cindy Blancher-Smith, Chair of the National Orphan/Abandoned Mines Initiative, to federal, provincial and territorial mines ministers, and to federal election candidates to call attention to serious gaps between scientific evidence and government policy in the reclamation and perpetual care of abandoned mines.  See the letter and questions.

Annual General Meeting
November 18 at Noon 

Alternatives North will hold the second part of its 2014 Annual General Meeting November 18, 2015 at 12 PM at the Public Service Alliance of Canada Boardroom, 4916 49th Street in Yellowknife.  The public is welcome to attend.

YK Living Wage Announced 

Alternatives North has announced the results of a living wage pilot project for Yellowknife, which estimates that a family of four with two full-time wage earners and two children require an income of $20.68 per hour to meet basic expenses.  See the media release, infographic and the full report.
